Q&A: R&P: what is your favorite “music” therapy?

April 28, 2012 By: harvey96 Category: Uncategorized 22 Comments →

Question by Punch: R&P: what is your favorite “music” therapy?
A new music therapy room at a hospital on Florida’s Gulf Coast is being named for AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson.

Music equipment and enhancements to the room at Sarasota Memorial Hospital are being donated by the John Entwhistle Foundation, named for the late bassist for the Who.

How inspiring and it certainly inspired this question…

Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, Third Eye Blind, and The Beatles make me actually ‘feel’ better. Yes, they are quite different from each other, but that’s okay.

How are you, btw? :D

Rock and Pop: Music as Therapy?

Question by Now Let Them Tremble: Rock and Pop: Music as Therapy?
Do any of you guys here in R&P use music as “therapy”?
As in, when you’re in a bad mood, like sad, you listen to sad songs to relate to them, then you listen to a Happy song to cheer up, etc.
I do that, and it always works.

BQ: Will y’all re-add me to your contacts? I got fricking suspended for nothing. Stupid arseholes.
Dude, Emo is a genre of music.
Not a person.

Do modern psychologists think “Music therapy” has therapeutic value in treating psychological problems?

Question by Geyamala: Do modern psychologists think “Music therapy” has therapeutic value in treating psychological problems?

Best answer:

Answer by trueprober
Hello Geyamala, actually musical vibrations have its own effect no doubt about it. But people who is well versed in his career and who has good intuition may come to know about it and may apply the same as one of the remedial techniques. If not so then they simply ignore and always depend only on the sleeping pills and soothing process.

What do you think of this idea for Music Therapy in Bipolar Disorder?

Question by Snox: What do you think of this idea for Music Therapy in Bipolar Disorder?
I term this specific type of therapy “Jukebox Therapy”. Write down 5 songs you like. The next time you listen to the radio or watch musiv videos have a a pen at hand. Write down every song you like. artist and title. Repeat throughout the course of a week or however long it takes you until you get 30+ songs. Download songs to a music cd through the use of a program such as Sony Sonic Stage so it is legal. Songs cost a dollar each mostly. Put cd into player and set on mp3 make for cd. Play cd on random so the order is variant each time you hear it. Or play cd straight through and try to have songs which have abalance to them ie upbeat song such as “How to save a life” by Fray followed by a slower song called Enya “May it Be.” Another good example of a song to be used is “Shimmer” by Fuel. Good songs used for studying when one is feel stressed out or in an all or nothing attitude on whether they will ace or fail the test can be countered by classical songs such as Star Wars.

I seem to be very sensitive to music depending on my moods. I’ve learned that sometimes it is best for me to TURN OFF the radio.

Your idea might be good. Sometimes music can be downright hypnotic to me. So a CD of uplifting “happy” music could truly sooth the savage beast.

How would you describe music therapy to someone?

Question by Slapstick82: How would you describe music therapy to someone?
I’m going to school for music therapy. I know what it is, but when people ask me what my major is then say, oh what’s that? I’m not totally sure how to answer them. How would you describe music therapy to someone? This website http://careersthatdontsuck.com/2007/03/30/career-profile-music-therapist/ explains it pretty well, but I can’t keep recommending people look there for an explanation. I feel bad when I have to answer “well I don’t know how to explain it”.

Please respond like you’re answering the following question;

“So you’re in college?”
“Yes. I go to —”
“Oh, cool. What’s your major?”
“Music therapy.”
“–Blank expression– What’s that?”

Since this is a field that is still being discovered, it and it’s results aren’t widely known to the general public yet. It can be compared to massage therapy where the results have proven to be enormously beneficial, yet there is a stigma associated with it due to varying methods of practice, none of which are fully agreed upon as the proper method (in time this will change as acceptance and knowlege grow).

The trick in this field is to know without a doubt what it is that you are able to provide to the patient. I take it that you love music and that it has helped you overcome things in the past. Realizing that you can share this with others must be very exciting!

Music is such a powerful and untapped tool. I encourage you to take what you’ve learned in school and expand on it in your own personal way. Doing so will help you discover more of what it is you’re actually trying to achieve, and will set you apart from the rest in what you provide.

In a nutshell I look at it this way: you help people with hindrances tap into and conquer hidden emotion linked with fear, using the tool of music.

So you could say, “I help people conquer their fears, using the emotional tool of music.”

Good luck! :)
